*I’m losing my faith and I don’t know what to believe anymore...*

Realising that your faith is shifting can be one of the scariest and loneliest experiences of your life. For many of us, it begins with a single issue, one nagging question or doubt that just won’t seem to budge.

This isn’t an article or a quick-fix therapy service. It is simply here to remind you (at the very least) that you are not alone, and that what you are sitting with right now is entirely normal.

Anxiety, worry, nausea, sleeplessness, headaches, panic, shame, guilt, fear… how could you *not* feel this way when the entire narrative of your existence is starting to bend in a way you never anticipated?

You may have heard of people going through this referred to as backsliders, prodigals, or apostates. These names rarely carry positive or affirming connotations. You’ve likely never been told that this is okay, quite the contrary. You might feel as though what you are experiencing is a "sin."

**Take a long, deep breath in (please, do it now if you can) and breathe out slowly.**

You’re safe here. You don’t have to work everything out in this exact moment; no definitive decision about your future is being made right now. You have discovered a sanctuary.

And if you *have* made a definitive decision (perhaps deciding that what you once believed is no longer your story) you are safe here, too.

So many of us have walked this path without a place to go or anyone to walk alongside us. That is why I create a therapeutic space as a trained and qualified counsellor: to help people through their faith crisis, faith journey, deconstruction, or departure. I don't work as a Christian therapist, but as a non-judgmental, empathetic practitioner who understands the narrative and has lived experience of the journey - both sticking around in it for a long time and, ultimately, leaving.

## The Neuroscience Behind Shifting or Losing Faith

Our belief systems exist in what is anatomically known as the **medial frontoparietal network (M-FPN)**. The M-FPN is the home of wakeful rest - where we daydream, where our minds wander, and, most importantly, where our identities are formed.

If religious beliefs are a fundamental part of how your M-FPN was formed, any shift in those beliefs can cause profound physical and psychological distress.

Faith shifts are a form of identity shift. When our sense of self feels threatened, our brains and bodies struggle to differentiate between an existential question and a physical attack. This is why religious faith has such a deep emotional connection to the **amygdala** (the region handling memory, decision-making, and fear responses) and the **insula** (which processes emotion, consciousness, and compassion).

This is why a faith shift feels so overwhelming and traumatic. It takes time for the autonomic nervous system to process these changes, and for neuroplasticity to build new neural pathways so that new ways of being feel safe.

## The Social & Emotional Cost

For many, changing beliefs carries real-world consequences. This isn't just an internal struggle. Religious communities often require commitment, obedience, and cooperation. Because faith systems are built on human connection, leaving a tribe is painful for the brain, even if it also brings a sense of relief. Navigating the tension between those two emotional states can cause significant distress.

Faith shifts often happen in two main stages: **intellectual** and **emotional**.

1. **The Intellectual Stage:** This is the research stage - exploring new ways of thinking about doctrine or seeing broader perspectives illuminated, eg:
  - *"There’s more than one way to understand this?"*
  - *"There are communities within my faith group that welcome LGBTQ+ people?"*
  - *"I don’t have to be certain about everything all the time?"*
2. **The Emotional Stage:** Once that last realization lands, a doorway opens to the emotional side of change. You begin allowing confusion, fear, uncertainty, and incongruence to sit with you.

It makes complete sense why this feels so isolating. How could anyone truly know what it’s like to hold your relationships, your secrets, your white lies, and your shifting beliefs all at once?

## Where Are You on the Journey?

- **You may not want to leave your faith community.** Leaving doesn’t have to be your story, but finding emotional and psychological clarity can help bring things back into focus.
- **You may want help processing a departure.** You know it’s time to seek freedom after faith, but taking those steps feels overwhelming with relationships standing in the way.
- **You may have left years ago.** Perhaps it’s time to unpack the dusty, taped-up boxes of the past that are still taking up emotional space, keeping what serves you and letting go of the rest.

None of these paths are straightforward, and they often take time to navigate.
